توصلت دراسة أميركية إلى أن الذين يتسمون بالتفاؤل يعيشون عمرا أطول مقارنة بنظرائهم المتشائمين. ووجد باحثون بجامعة بيتسبورغ أن النساء اللائي يتوقعن الأفضل أقل احتمالا بواقع 14% للوفاة مقارنة بالمتشائمات، وتقل لديهن بنسبة 30% الوفاة بأمراض القلب. ووجدت الدراسة التي تتبعت الحالات الصحية لأكثر من مائة ألف امرأة فوق سن الخمسين على مدى ثماني سنوات، أن المتفائلات أقل نسبة للإصابة بارتفاع ضغط الدم والبول السكري أو الإقبال على التدخين.
